“Energy Crossroads” sparks global discussion on taking clean energy mainstream

STANFORD, California, April 7, 2008

On April 30-May 1, Stanford University will host a high profile, interdisciplinary conference offering fresh perspectives on the future of clean energy. "From Vision to Action," the theme of the 2008 Energy Crossroads conference, is about going beyond the idea of clean, secure, and sustainable energy to actually achieving tangible action, results, and progress. The conference will highlight the ways in which energy solutions are being brought into the mainstream and are beginning to reach all individuals around the globe.

The event will feature two keynote addresses and a variety of panels and round table discussions from a large line-up of distinguished speakers. Cathy Zoi, the CEO of Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection as well as Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus, co-authors of the award-winning book, “Break Through: From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility” will deliver key note addresses on Wednesday, April 30th and Thursday, May 1st. Panelists include NGO and business strategists, clean energy investors, and leading researchers on energy policy and technology.

In addition to the panel discussions on Thursday, Energy Crossroads will showcase a wealth of exciting and sustainable energy solutions in a Clean Energy Expo. The team is bringing in clean-tech start-ups, green architects and designers, green construction companies, sustainable product manufacturers, large corporations with green initiatives, and more.

“Even before today's college students reach middle age, global climate change threatens to become the most serious crisis ever to confront human civilization. Energy Crossroads is a vital and creative initiative to raise awareness not only of the unsustainability of our current patterns of energy use, but of the wide variety of practical and promising initiatives to develop alternative sources of energy,” stated Professor Larry Diamond, a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institute.

The proactive students behind Energy Crossroads come from a diverse spectrum of academic disciplines, ranging from engineering to public policy. With chapters established this year in Stanford, Denmark, and Singapore, Energy Crossroads is now also a global movement. Driven by concerns for the environment, economic growth and national security, Energy Crossroads is dedicated to promoting a clean, prosperous and secure energy future by building a coalition of policymakers, engineers, entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, academics, and activists.

Conference sponsors include the Office of Student Activities, Woods Institute for the Environment, Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency, School of Earth Sciences, Lightspeed Venture Partners, The 11th Hour Project, and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
